Things To Do In Godalming

Godalming is an attractive and prosperous market town close to the cathedral city of Guildford in Surrey. It has existed since Saxon times and is full of listed buildings, so if you are visiting you can have an enjoyable time wandering round the town centre and sampling its superb shops. One of the outstanding attractions in the town itself is the Winkworth Arboretum.

Unlike much of the historic town of Godalming, the Arboretum only dates from the last century, but it has already established itself as a stunning place to visit at all times of the year. You can picnic by the steep sides of the lake or wander through the beautiful wetlands, surrounded by the stunning blossom and flowering meadows in spring or the dramatic foliage in autumn. Guildford

Less than four miles from Godalming to the north is the fascinating city of Guildford.

• Guildford Castle dates from mediaeval times, but only the tower keep now remains. It is open to the public and there is a platform on the roof where visitors can enjoy panoramic views of Guildford and the Surrey countryside.

• Dapdune Wharf is one of the National Trust's most unusual properties. You can learn the history of one of England's oldest working waterways and enjoy boat trips on the river Wey.

If you travel a few miles from Godalming in the other direction, you come to Hindhead Commons on the edge of the South Downs National Park.
