If you want to visit a historic market town during a visit to London, you can find one just 25miles away if you go south on the A24 which goes from London to Worthing. You can even catch a more leisurely train ride from Waterloo station which should take you there within the hour. Besides the town you will be going through the surrounding Surrey Hills area that has some outstanding natural beauty spots.
Dorking is a market town that has been around for hundreds of years and has always served as a center for villages and townspeople living around it. It also has a reputation of hosting many festivals for literature, music and the visual arts. Its origin goes back to Roman times and has inspired authors like Charles Dickens to place his characters and novel locations in that area. The composer Ralph Vaughan Williams was also inspired by the surrounding countryside.
Buildings in Dorking have a mix of buildings in Edwardian and Victorian styles and this mixture is the magic that enthralls visitors to its town center. There are a number of historical pubs and inns that flourished for hundreds of the years as Dorking was used as a staging post for travel to the coast. Its proximity to London also led to many of the prosperous families building fine houses in and about the town. A home built for William Forman in 1856 now functions as public library and even now its interiors provide a distraction to people who come in to visit the facility. So go down the heritage trail and visit all the fine buildings in Dorking when you are looking for things to do.
The Dorking Caves are another spot that a lot of visitors make a beeline for. These caves were all man made and seem to have been used to provide for London rebuilding after a fire in 1666 destroyed most of it. Some caves functioned as wine cellars and the sandstone from the caves can be seen in a lot of buildings in Dorking. The caves cannot be entered into at the moment, but a visit to them is possible if you take a Taxi out of Dorking.
One of the most interesting things to do in Dorking is to take the Vineyard Land train (April to October only) and visit the 265 acre Denbies wine estate. You can have wine experience tours or choose to dine out in the third floor Gallery Restaurant. You are taken through the winery and allowed to taste wine in very impressive cellars. You can even pick up some plants, vines and fruit trees from their Garden Center.
